Night at the Oscars

About a month ago, we had a massive fundraiser for the church with the theme 'A Night at the Oscars'. We decorated the church building and invited people from all over Oroville to come and eat and be entertained (and squeazed for every penny they had available!). There was a slient auction, a raffle, games and some hilarious acting-out of different film clips. The evening was a huge success, and we really enjoyed being a part of it.

Oroville

Welcome to Southside

The Father's House Church, where we will be living for at least the next five months, is located in Southside, Oroville.

Southside is the local name for the infamous south part of Oroville, a city of about 13,000 people in Butte County, California. It is a forgotten and deprived place, blighted by generations of drug and alcohol abuse. The lethal drug methamphetamine, now abused by millions, was first cooked up in Southside. 48% of the inhabitants are below the poverty line and many are homeless as a result of addiction. Children grow up scarred by abuse, abandonment and neglect. Before the Father’s House began a cleanup operation, the streets were filled with garbage and discarded, broken-down cars.

But this isn't the end of the story. For the last 15 years, the Father's House has been working to bring transformation to Southside.  In future posts we'll try to tell some of the incredible stories of the peope we've met here, as well as keeping you updated with what's happening to us.

The Father's House

The Father's House Staff, Church Building, and a random photo of Downtown Oroville

The Father's House Church is located in South Oroville, where substance abuse and poverty have created a slum-like area. TFHC is a community of family and friends who are trying to turn around a whole community by living and loving like Jesus: selflessly.

Hey everyone! Welcome to our new blog, which we are putting together to share some of our experiences of living here in Southside, Oroville, and working at the Father's House Church. We've all found it hard to communicate exactly what it's like here, what we're doing, and most of all how two brits and a peruvian-swede ended up in a small town in Northern California (we're a bit lost on that one), so hopefully this will help. We'll try to keep you updated on our news, upload photos and videos, and generally keep you in the loop. If you want to get a feel for what The Father's House is all about, why not visit www.changeoroville.com.
